Recently the Virginia Beach Arts Center put out a call for artists for a Monochromatic themed show.
In the call it mentioned this might be a good opportunity to try something with fabric. (or something to that effect).
I gave it some thought and kept thinking there are lots of shades of blue denim and that could be used to create a piece based on water.
Well, I dove into our donation bag in the garage. I found several pieces of blue fabric including some denim. I realized I may need a lot of different values, shades and tones of blue fabric so off I went to the thrift store. I returned home with way more fabric than I needed for less than $13. It took me a while to settle on a subject, but I finally found a water related image that lent itself to abstraction.
Several hours later and a lot of glue later I had created something. I wasn't quite impressed and felt a little defeated. It was a spontaneous inspiration after all. I left my mess in the art room and set the glue-soaked piece up for a few days. Eventually things dried and the more I stared at it the more the piece started to grow on me. I eventually got up the nerve to submit it for the show. I really didn't think it would get selected, but it did. Hopefully it is well received. It certainly is not my normal type of work, but I feel like it's a thought-provoking piece with unique texture, patterns and color values.
